Important Tips for Overwintering Your Lawn – What Are the Main Points You Need to Know About?

When To Fertilize Lawn Overwintering QuestionsWinter lawn care isn’t typically something that most homeowners trouble themselves with. After all, your lawn is not likely to grow too much during the winter, and even though cool-season ryegrass can grow sometimes in the south, the northern areas will typically just require you to wait patiently until the spring comes, when most of your lawn maintenance work will be required.

However, even in the winter, you can do certain things that will help your lawn stay healthy:

  1. You can start by applying fertilizer with a spreader. Just make sure you don’t apply too much, and follow the instructions on the fertilizer package as closely as possible.  Get advice for when to fertilize lawn in Colorado for best results.
  2. You can also try aerating your lawn. Use a basic spade to take out spikes of soil across your lawn if you own a smaller lawn, and get a manual or a motorized aerator if you own a larger lawn.
  3. Make sure you clear any unwanted debris from your lawn to prevent it from attracting bugs and parasites that can damage your lawn even in the winter.
  4. In some cases, you can also spread cool-weather grass seeds on your lawn. The seeds will likely add volume to your lawn later on, so make sure you add them evenly, preferably with the same spreader you previously used to add fertilizer.
