Mulching is the most efficient agro-technology “tool”. Here are some of its main benefits.
- prevents the evaporation of water from the roots
- protects the roots from sudden temperature differences: prevents overheating in summer and frost in winter
- ensures an optimum level of acidity of the soil
- enriches the soil with nourishing and beneficial substances, improving its structure, therefore regenerating it
- chokes off weeds, preventing their development, because it does not allow the light to penetrate too deep (the mulch layer must be of at least 7-10 cm)
- allows the multiplication of beneficial microorganisms in the substrate and helps them in their tireless work
- protects plants from pests
- prevents mold formation in some crops: strawberry, pumpkin…
The best time for mulching is either late spring or early fall. As mulch has the ability to reduce temperature variations in the soil, applying it too early in spring will delay the soil warming process, and thus the beginning of the gardening season. That`s why mulching should be done only starting with the end of April, when the soil is already warm and wet. Also, early autumn is a good time to mulch because the soil has a relatively high temperature due to the heat accumulated during the summer, so the vegetation season can be extended by a few weeks. The mulch must also be applied when the narrowing of the layer due to decomposition becomes observable. This process is to be repeated at intervals of 2-3 months.
