Not all grass seeds are created equal – some are very sensitive to the amount of water they get, others are not, so how well your grass thrives during dry spells, how much of its lush green color it is able to retain essentially depends on the grass variety that you use. Here are some tips about how to choose drought-resistant varieties that you can rely on:
- Consider how warm or cold your region generally is – the two broadest grass seed categories are warm-season and cool season grasses. Warm-season seeds prefer areas that get hot summers and mild winters, while cool-season grasses love temperate summers and they don’t mind freezing winters. You can find varieties developed with drought resistance in either category;
- Warm season varieties that need very little water – Bermuda, St. Augustine and Zoysia are the three sturdiest varieties in the category. They need between 0.5-1.25 inches of water per week and they can resist drought that lasts between 30-50 days. If you use any of these seeds, be prepared that your turf might go dormant after extended drought periods, so be patient and keep watering until your grass recovers;
- Cold season varieties – Kentucky Bluegrass and Fescue are the two most reliable seed varieties. Their water needs are between 0.7-1.5 inches and they can tolerate drought that lasts very long, the grass thrives when organic lawn fertilizer is applied after germination.
