Tips for Preparing Your Lawn for Cooler Weather

If you have spent all summer mowing, watering and fertilizing your lawn to make it beautiful, you probably want to make sure that your grass is strong enough to survive the cold season and to come back to life strong and beautiful the next year. The best way to achieve that is to change your lawn care routine a bit as the cold weather approaches and to know when to fertilize lawn in Colorado – here are some tips:

• Let your grass grow taller – taller fall grass might not look as velvety as your summer lawn, but making mowing intervals longer and leaving your grass about an inch longer will make it stronger, more resistant to lower temperatures;
• Fertilize – adding a natural fertilizer before the first frost is very important for strong grass. Use compost or some type of organic fertilizer that releases its nutrient content slowly and will ensure proper nourishment for your turf when the weather turns really cold;
• Reduce the amount of water you add with irrigation, then stop watering – in cooler weather, your turf does not need as much water as it used to need in hot periods, so you can reduce the intensity as well as the frequency of your watering sessions. Stop watering completely about two weeks before the first frost – if the soil is too wet when the frost comes, it might cause your grass to freeze.
