Tips for Starting to Compost

Organic Lawn Care With Compost StartsMaking your own compost is the best way to have access to high-quality natural fertilizer for your lawn and garden all year long and it is also the cheapest way to get that fertilizer. The process is very simple: all you need is a large bin in which you collect the organic waste that you generate in your household. Here are some more composting tips:

  • The waste that you can use – spoiled fruits and vegetables, fruit and vegetable peels and cores, coffee grounds, eggshells, pieces of stale bread, leaves and grass clippings from your yard can all go into your compost bin and is great for organic lawn care later;
  • Types of waste to avoid – waste of animal origin, such as meat, fish, chicken, dairy, oil and greasy bits should be avoided because they attract pests and they might spread diseases or contaminate your compost;
  • Be patient – if the weather is hot and you take the time to water and turn your compost regularly, you can have compost ready to use in about two months. You will know when your compost is ready by the texture – you need a substance that is relatively uniform, without large, intact and recognizable ingredients and that no longer emanate any heat.
